Moonchild is a LA-based neo-soul trio comprised of Amber Navran (vocals, tenor saxophone, flute), Max Bryk (alto saxophone, flute, clarinet, keys, synth), and Andris Mattson (trumpet, flugelhorn, keys, synth). Moonchild’s sound is an innovative blend of jazz-infused harmonies and contemporary soul.

Their music can be described as a melodic journey that takes listeners through dreamy soundscapes and soothing rhythms. Each member’s instrumental expertise adds layers to their compositions, creating a unique sonic palette that sets them apart in the Neo-soul genre.

Cure (Voyager, 2017)

“Cure” is a cool and tranquil tune that effortlessly sweeps you off your feet with its chill allure. Moonchild’s lead-singer Amber, backed by the band members Max and Andris, graces the track with a voice as soft and soothing as celestial whispers in your ear.

Amber’s radiant vocals are beautifully accentuated, creating an immersive soundscape that feels like a warm embrace from nature itself. Moonchild’s expertly crafted production coupled with its soul-stirring delivery make “Cure” a powerful elixir for any weary soul seeking solace.

The List (Voyager, 2017)

“The List,” one of the fan favorites in the album “Voyager” is a real authentic tune making you tap your feet and snap your fingers on its bouncy ryhthm and Neo-jazzy arrangement. Many also love the live version at NPR Tiny Desk that is one of the most flawlessly executed, impeccably synchronized performances ever in the NPR live.

Among Moonchild’s other brilliant pieces, this track particularly reflects their signature “minimalistic” vibe that listeners deeply appreciate. It shies away from overtones and embellishments, instead offering an unadulterated yet still profoundly soulful mellowness. Just beautiful.

Money (Little Ghost, 2019)

With its funky basslines and catchy hooks, “Money” is an upbeat anthem that will have you grooving along from start to finish. The track captures Amber Navran, Andris Mattson, and Max Bryk in their prime, consistently serving up the soulful and smooth Moonchild melodies that fans have grown to adore.

As many of you may already know, the three musicians in this LA-based galatic Neo-soul trio are multi-instumentalists. Their fluffy horn section that spans the interlude and outro creates an addictive harmony, compelling you to listen to the song all the way through, and then hit replay.

The Other Side (Little Ghost, 2019)

“The Other Side” brilliantly blends wide-ranging, bright melodies and harmonies with captivating interludes, demonstrating the band’s top-notch musical skills.

The song lyrics depict the challenges or struggles faced in a long-lasting relationship during its later phases. Various emotions arise, ranging from hopefulness and regret to exhaustion, weariness, healing, feeling abandoned, embrace, or complete acceptance.

We try to mend the roof
Before the storm has passed
And we’re growing tired
Of fixing up the same path
Careful steps and quiet lies
Come to recognize
I’m gonna try ‘cause
The grass is always greener on the other side
(The other side)
The grass is always greener on the other side
I’m gonna try ‘cause (The other side)

Wise Women (Little Ghost, 2019)

In “Wise Women”, a catchy bounce beat initially establishes its background rhythm and a beautiful keyboard melody emerges with subtle bass line toning in with the drum beats that makes you tap your feet.

Navran smoothly enters and sings with her whispering vocals, delicately weaving through fluty lo-fi vibes throughout the song. The chic horn section featured in the bridge/interlude is another captivating element that Moonchild showcases in many of their compositions.

Love I Need ft. Rapsody (Starfruit, 2022)

“Love I Need,” featuring Grammy award-winning rapper Rapsody is bubbly soulful hip-hop tune. Navran’s calming voice and Rapsody’s well-delivered raps carries poignant lyrics that delve into the core of love, illustrating the journey of transitioning from singlehood to discovering love.

The song’s slap bass riffs provide the required edge, allowing this collaborative harmony to grab a full-on and relaxed balance over the smooth brass-infused rhythm, which prevents the song from becoming too intense.

Tell Him ft. Lalah Hathaway (Starfruit, 2022)

“Tell Him,” featuring Lalah Hathaway, encapsulates a romantic dilemma in a relationship where words become empty echoes, contemplating the decision to either stride forward or step back in their relationship.

I listen and listen and listen
Weary of the line
He’s looking for help
But somehow
My lips start the fire
I give him the food I’m making
I give him the money I’m saving
He won’t hear a thing I’m saying
Just wanna make it right

Crazy how a kiss
Takes the power from your lips
He don’t wanna hear it from me
Hear it from me

You gon’ have to tell him…

“Tell Him” has evolved into a vibrant and intricately crafted composition with poetic lyrics that signify annoyance and misunderstanding. The band’s sophisticated dedication in production let you experience a seductive synth groove remaining pleasing to your ear.
